The deafening roar filled the air with every wicked strike Lincecum launched at the demoralized Texas Rangers in the final innings of game five of the 2010 World Series. Tonight was the night–I could feel it and so could the other tens of thousands who packed in to Civic Center Plaza to watch the Jumbotron simulcast of the game. By the top of the 9th, just the site of The Beard warming up in the bullpen sent the packed crowd into a frenzy.
And then it happened. Like a nuclear fission reaction that has been forming for 53 years, the city exploded into an eruption of jubilation and pandemonium on the final strikeout. The San Francisco Giants won the World Series.
After partying under the orange glow of City Hall, the multitudes flowed like a deluge onto Market Street and then marched through the streets to the ballpark. San Francisco hasn’t had a party like this in over 15 years since the 49ers last won the Super Bowl. The torture is over. Nothing to do now but celebrate!
