Just minutes after Stanford’s 38-31 loss to Notre Dame on November 26, 2005, backhoes hit the 50 yard line at Stanford Stadium and went to work. Demolition was underway, but it would be the fans who would do most of the demolishing that night.
Fans poured onto the field ripping out sod while others broke out toolkits to dismantle bleacher seats for souvenirs. Other people just ran around berserk ripping out anything they could get their hands on. As fans climbed the goalposts, the announcer came on the PA: please do not break the goalposts…we need them for the new stadium!
